At Laurel Canyon Dental in Valley Village, CA, we have plenty of ways to enhance and restore your smile, no matter what dental problem you’re dealing with. If a tooth is too severely damaged or decayed to be treated with a filling, we may recommend that a dental crown be fitted to restore and preserve the tooth. A dental crown is a cap that fits right over the tooth to replace lost structure and restore functionality. The best candidates for dental crowns are people who have experienced serious tooth damage or decay.
Updated Materials, Beautiful Results
There are several materials to choose from, but all-porcelain crowns are the most realistic in appearance. Since there’s no metal, you don’t have to worry about an unattractive dark line showing through at the gum line. And since porcelain crowns can be made to match the color of your natural teeth, they’ll blend seamlessly with your smile.
Dental crowns not only protect teeth from further damage – they can be used to reshape, realign, or whiten a tooth, adding to a bright, healthy smile. Dr. Darien Ephram uses dental crowns to correct a number of problems:
• Support a tooth that has extensive decay
• Protect a broken tooth
• Improve the appearance of an unusually shaped tooth
• Restore a dental implant
• Stabilize a dental bridge
• Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
Placing a Dental Crown
Having a crown placed usually takes two visits. During the first visit, we’ll take digital x-rays of your teeth so we can determine if there are any underlying problems we need to address before the crown is applied.
Depending on the condition of the damaged tooth, Dr. Ephram will either build up or file down the tooth so that the crown can be put into place. We’ll numb the tooth before we begin so that the entire process is painless and comfortable.
Next, we’ll take impressions that we’ll use to create a mold of the tooth. This mold is sent to a local dental lab where the crown will be designed to our exact specifications. Before you leave our office, we’ll fit you with a temporary to wear until your final crown is finished, usually about two weeks.
When your new crown is ready, we’ll have you come back to the office. We’ll remove the temporary and adjust the new crown so it fits perfectly. Once we’re happy with the fit, shade, and contour of the crown, we’ll cement it securely in place.
